W=Wolf / B=Brendan
Wolf: Really, the whole game changes like ByuL’s entire base is on the other side of the map
Brendan: Yeah.
Wolf: Lurkers, while they’re burrowed, they’re cloaking so you can kind of see detector, observer control is important, and engaging in that kind of position, like we’re talking about controlling that space - is why Lurkers are so powerful in this matchup.
Brendan: So, we’re gonna be going into Dusk Towers here for set #2. If ByuL can win this one, he will take the best of 3. And Dusk Towers is a pretty interesting map. You know, it’s got that backdoor base. ByuL should be pretty happy to just macro up on this map, and go head to head once again with Trust. So guys, we’re gonna jump straight into that game right now.
Brendan: ByuL versus Trust here on Dusk Towers. Another really fantastic intro here. Up on the top right, the red Zerg, of course this is ByuL.
Wolf: And to the bottom left, in blue, his former teammate. It is Trust. And just the tension in this series between these two players that know each other very well is, you know, you can kind of feel it.
Brendan: Yeah. I’m glad that you mentioned that, actually. One thing we did not get to mention from the interview is that ByuL said about Trust - that Trust is kind of a wonky player, you know, likes to place pretty wacky strats from time to time, so ByuL was kind of a bit scared of that, I suppose, is wary of it coming into this game. And right off the bat here we’re actually going to have double gateway, it looks like.
Wolf: Yeah, it’s going to be 2-gate Adept. Which means we’ll probably see two threads about this.
Brendan: Yeah.
Wolf: It’s usually when you go 2-gate Adept equals two threads about it on the internet. And some people are going to be upset already at adepts. I know that there already is some guy on the internet like, “Do you remember last game when Trust made Adepts but he didn’t really commit with them? Like, THAT’s why he lost.” It wasn’t about the Lurker control
Brendan: He didn’t use the Protoss OP unit. So that’s why he lost, of course.
Wolf: But some guy right now is going like, “See!? He made TWO Adepts right in the beginning. Because he KNOWS!” Oh, it’s quite a powerful opening, and the Adept itself actually, for those of you who have not played Protoss, is actually quite a very difficult unit to control. You know, you make a Shade of it and you send it out, and now you control the Adept itself and the Shade. You can control them together or separately. You can cancel the Shade which means that the Adept will not teleport to the Shade. I see a Twilight Council here, so it could be DTs or Adept attack speed.
Brendan: We saw this, actually. Trap versus Shine yesterday. It was a very aggressive Adept opening into DTs as the followup, because you know the Zerg is like, “Oh God, there’s a bunch of Adepts in my base, and I got to deal with all this.” The first thing they’re not thinking about, of course, is detection. And that’s the followup.
Wolf: Yup, that’s the first thing they’re NOT thinking about.
Brendan: Yeah, the first thing they’re NOT thinking. The LAST thing they’re thinking about. Thank you, Wolf.
Wolf: But, the second thing they’re not thinking about is their ex-girlfriend at that one time. Or the first thing is Adepts, or excuse me, DTs. Now, this is what I am talking about. You can control the Adept while the Shade is moving, and if the units go chase your Shade, you can just cancel the Shade. So they’re already killing quite a few Drones here, stopping a lot of mining.
Brendan: And this micro here out of ByuL is actually going to save that last Drone at this base. And the Adept is going to go down. So it is going to take away a lot of power from this. This one Adept - you need two to one-shot a Ling or a Drone.
Wolf: And this actually… Losing these Adepts really weakens the position of Trust because he’s also going for an Adept, it looks like, aggression followup…
Brendan: Yeah.
Wolf: ...with a timing attack, perhaps, more into the round, the Resonating Glaives, the attack speed upgrade. So, this is something that would be difficult for ByuL to scout, but he killed so many Adepts already, which makes his position a lot stronger.
Brendan: This is the first step in stopping this. He’s got a pretty nice… not the best economy back at home, but he’s up at 35 Drones and slowly but surely looking to drone up here, going to add seven more. And he knows that there is no anti-air in this base at the same time, so he’s got the Overlord just floating by, seeing what’s what in the Protoss base.
Wolf: Now, he wants to deny this base. Killing this Probe would be huge. I think he probably could have even committed there, but decides not to. And delaying this base for as long as possible is such a smart idea for ByuL, that’s why he’s made this many Lings, and that’s why his economy, like you said before, is kind of low, like he’s in the 30s for Drones, but now he’s up to 46. And these Lings are giving him a lot of power here to continue to deny this base.
Brendan: Yeah, it’s just really smart to go into that, a bunch of Lings and Speed, because you can deny the third base, you get so much map control. And at the same time, he’s getting a full scout so he knows 100% what his next move is going to be in response to what Trust is doing.
Wolf: Yeah, so a Baneling Nest coming up here again. ByuL seems to like this as a response to the Adepts because we saw him build it last game. It didn’t ever come into use, but you know, seeing it twice like this means that it’s no longer a coincidence. He’s actually adding this thing as kind of the standard response. soO did not make Banelings in his match.
Brendan: But you know how that story went.
Wolf: In a different matchup, but you know, Baneling is a good unit.
Brendan: Any Banelings. And yeah, it’s definitely an interesting idea. He can get Baneling Speed, or even just keep them in your base on creep. Should be able to do a number to these Adepts. The Adepts are not that fast.
Wolf: Yeah. And like, for example, if you had Banelings here, the Adepts could not push forward this quickly. And also, if the Shades go in your main base, all you have to do is sit Banelings on the Shades.
Brendan: Yeah.
Wolf: And then the Shades have to be cancelled, or they’re just going to teleport to their doom. So, it’s definitely an intersting concept. He had a huge commitment to the attack speed, which is why these Adepts are all so scary right now. Three Banelings being morphed. Oh man, I don’t know about this. He like, actually committed so much. That was scary, like, going for the Drones?
Brendan: Yeah, he was going straight for the Drones. He doesn’t even care about the Lings here. He’s just like, “Okay, I want to get some damage done to your economy. I know that I kind of have to catch up here.” And the Lings are going to be easy to deal with in the future because he does have… sorry about that. He does have such a high Adept count in his army already.
Wolf: Now contrary to what you may have read on the internet, the Adept is a light ranged unit that, as the longer the game goes on, especially with dealing with units like Lurkers for example, might not actually end up being the best art, you know, the late game army. You’re going to need some AoE. You’re going to need some support. Charge Zealots, you know, are going to come in to support them with base harassments and things like this. But Trust committed a lot of gas to his attack speed that killed for him like, what, one Drone, then he ran away? It was not a very successful build so far. He’s transitioning to Phoenixes to take Mutalisks out of the equation, like “Don’t build Mutalisks” basically when you see those Phoenixes you go, “Maybe get a Drone or two but, okay, I’m not…” You can not build Mutalisks. It’s like not an option right now.
Brendan: And you know, Phoenix-Adept is not all that bad against only Hydras, that we are seeing coming out only just yet. No Lurker Den coming out, just yet.
Wolf: Yeah.
Brendan: So this composition is going to be good for the mid-game against Zerg, especially once he does eventually transition into Charge, as he is doing now.
Wolf: I think the Adepts are always going to be a great unit defensively too, versus a comp like this, trying to go up the ramp against those ranged units. They can also Shade behind, and can do a lot of harassment if he can get a Prism out, which, as I say this, a Prism finishes. He’s going to go to a second Robotics just like we saw last game.
Brendan: Oooh, nice bit of harass here in the main. Nothing to defend this but a Spore Crawler. When you get that many Phoenixes, it’s kind of hard to deal with. Now this harass is going to be shut down, unfortunately for ByuL. Not going to be able to cancel that fourth base. And oooh, we have a Nydus Network on the way.
Wolf: Check that out. That’s some… that means ByuL really wants to be quite aggressive early on here. He does not want to really mess around. I think he’s just going to try to go for what was once called in StarCraft I a “Lurker Drop” but you know, drops are still not that viable, especially versus Phoenixes in this case. So, one really important piece of information on this map that I want everyone to think about for a second is, “Where is he going to Nydus?” There’s one Overlord to the left of the third base. That Overlord is so important right now. If he had killed it, this would be a totally different game right now becuse Nydus is less viable, and he has to have a unit there. He just might Nydus the front as well if that Overlord dies. But it’s so important that he hasn’t seen that.
Brendan: This is another one of those things that going Phoenixes brings to you in terms of utility. You clear out of all the Overlords, you clear out any scouting ability from the Zerg, and he kind of missed that one, as we were saying. Oh boy, Trust almost doing a repeat of last game, throwing away all of his Phoenixes. But this time, he’s paying attention.
Wolf: That’s right. So, just looking at the situation here. This push across the map is quite scary. He’s just going to Nydus the front. He’s not even going to try to use that Overlord. He doesn’t want to show his cards just yet. He’s just going to simply use this for reinforcement power. The Queens will come with this, most likely. That observer is highlighting that because the Queens can keep the Nydus alive with Transfuse, not exactly the best unit to have in your army.
Brendan: Oh…
Wolf: And he’s going to Nydus here at the same time. He can actually go for three Nyduses.
Brendan: Yeah, this is actually such a cool idea. He can really split up this Protoss army. We are going to have the lifts coming in. Some Banelings actually rolling through and going to roll into a bunch of Archons. Not very effective there, but this is only Roach-Hydra, no Lurkers in the mix.
Wolf: Yeah, where are the Lurkers? They must be in the Nydus but they’re not coming out of here. Now he’s just going to teleport from this base to the Protoss’s base, and this Nydus Network was not dealt with. They’re just going to stream out here. Now, the other thing is, if Trust doesn’t deal with the other Nydus, by the time his army gets home, guess what? Those Hydralisks are going to go back to the third base.
Brendan: Yeah, and they actually have a bunch of units already at that third base. Trust is going to have to split up his army, and he loses his backdoor base. He does, you know, thankfully defend that fourth base, but still having a bit of a problem here in the backdoor of his base.
Wolf: ByuL is just going to engage this because it’s pure Hydra versus Phoenix-Immortal, so he kills all the Phoenixes and escapes. Now this backdoor will be destroyed so he cannot actually teleport back to that base anymore. But what a really cool play here. Basically using Nydus like it was only used occasionally in StarCraft I: it was actually something like a teleportation technique rather than you know, like something you would use to all-in your opponent. And he’s going to do it again because Nydus Networks are impervious to damage while being built. This is going to keep opening up a backdoor.
Brendan: Yeah, and look at this. Storm, not enough energy on those High Templars to deal with all the Roaches that are coming in. Trying to tunnel through here to get into that back line. A bunch of the High Templars do go down, some of them morphing into Archons, but still having a really hard time dealing with these Roaches.
Wolf: Yeah. This is… looks to be the beginning of the end here for Trust because he’s taking too much damage. He has no transition point, you know? He’s making pure Immortals to deal with this, but there are Lurkers on the map.
Brendan: Oh, here are the Lurkers. Finally making some of those. One of them does go down, and he does have an Observer in position. But he’s taken so much damage to his front line, really only Immortals left over. A nice warp-in though in the back here is going to push ByuL back to his base.
Wolf: Yeah, ByuL has a huge army but not all of it is together, so he needs to be careful about throwing units away for free. That Nydus is still available for that backdoor base.
Brendan: Well, he’s making it now. So, it doesn’t look like Trust has any vision of this coming down. And, in fact, you get back there into that tech, into the main, you can send some Lings in there, even.
Wolf: This is so important. He finally starts dealing with this detection back here. Because that was the big deal. That was what unlocked this opportunity in the first place. Now, the units come over here, but guess what? He’s going to get on the high ground back here, behind this base. He’s going to kill…
Brendan: Oh, man.
Wolf: This Pylon, he can put Lurkers up here. And he can hit that mineral line. And that’s going to put Trust on one mining base, while ByuL is taking even more bases.
Brendan: Yeah, this is part of the reason why you take the other fourth base, generally. I guess he wanted this fourth base to be a bit closer, but you can see some of the weaknesses of taking this one. You can have your mineral line shelled. Still no vision up here up top. And we do have another Nydus. Changelings in the main, and he still hasn’t dealt with them.
Wolf: Yeah, and because you can make Overseers basically there’s always going to be a threat, there’s always going to be a problem. ByuL isn’t using the Nydus as an all-in. He’s used it as a strat.
Brendan: Yeah, man.
Wolf: You know, as basically an extra tool.
Brendan: Super, super cool, and he obviously came prepared today. And I think this may be the last fight. No, we do have some Zealots pushing through and actually the Archons and the Immortals sticking with the army so more Zealots coming through.
Wolf: It’s just such a long walk across the map, especially when ByuL has not been spreading creep across the map, so he’s been relying on these Nyduses. The reinforcements trickle in slowly. I feel like a big switch to Mutas would be beautiful right now. He has so much money. He’s making 26 more Roaches versus pure Immortal. I think he’s having a bit of tunnel vision like, “I got this, the game’s over. I just keep attacking until I win. I have a Nydus, I can keep reinforcing.” But I think a switch to Mutas would just be so powerful right now, but he doesn’t have the tech for that. I believe he cancelled the Spire like last game. Yeah, he doesn’t have a Spire.
Brendan: Look at this. I mean, I’m not sure if it’s on camera - there we go. All the Lurkers are still not dealt with. 9, 11 Probes, 12. He couldn’t mind here for so long.
Wolf: Nydus in the main.
Brendan: He lost a nice portion of those Probes.
Wolf: He can’t kill the Nydus while it’s morphing. You know, that’s one of the reasons why Nydus is so powerful in Legacy. You cannot kill it while it’s morphing, while it’s building. This base is going to go down for free, and then he can actually walk back to his Nydus and then teleport into the main.
Brendan: Look at the army of Trust, totally out of position dealing with those Lurkers. ByuL is just running circles around this guy, man. Making it look easy right now in ZvP with this Nydus play.
Wolf: This is really cool. We’re seeing some innovation here.
Brendan: GG.
Wolf: GG. ByuL takes the 2-0 and will advance. Trust is not out - he will go to the loser bracket.
Brendan: So he’s got another chance, but ByuL the obvious favorite here, coming through and SMASHING Trust 2-0.
Wolf: Now, we’ve only had three best of three’s in StarLeague now, but ByuL is the first favorite player, the people expected to go through, who actually did go through and win this. I believe Trust did not play a bad series. He just definitely struggled to deal with ByuL’s aggression, his multitasking failed him at times.
Brendan: Yeah, but there is some promise, I’d say. He’s definitely going up against one of these veterans who obviously showed some really fantastic play and technique in that game. Kind of, you know, Terrans got a bunch of drops, Protoss has got the Warp Prisms, and ByuL’s like, “Hey, we got the Nydus Network, don’t forget about that,” and he used that to get into the back, and do that damage. Guys, we’re gonna have the interview now, with ByuL here, and Jungyun.
